The Kymatonics P.C. is a SPIN-OFF of the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser of the Foundation of Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH). Our expertise is in developing optical solutions for smart and precise light control.  Kymatonics’ philosophy is “Innovation through precision R&D” and is focused on providing solutions to users based on a deep understanding of the problems and limitations of currently available technology offerings.

Giannis Zacharakis

Dr. Giannis Zacharakis is a Research Director at IESL-FORTH and Head of the Laboratory for Biophotonics and Molecular Imaging. He was President of the European Society for Molecular Imaging (2019-2020) and served in various leadership roles since 2014. He holds a BSc in Physics (1997) and a PhD (2002) from the University of Crete. He was a Research Fellow at Harvard University (2003-2004) and held roles at FORTH from 2005, becoming a Principal Researcher in 2017 and achieving his current role in 2024. His work focuses on biophotonics and biomedical imaging, with 82 journal publications, 3 patents, and significant international collaborations. Dr. Zacharakis is also Chief Scientific Officer at Traqbeat Technologies PC.

Emmanouil Vergis

Emmanouil Vergis has a PhD in economics and econometrics with a main interest in market analysis and entrepreneurship. He is an adjunct lecturer in the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics of the University of Crete, and he has long experience in project management. Dr. Vergis holds the position of Chief Operation Officer at KYMATONICS.

Evangelos Marakis

Evangelos Marakis, based at the Laboratory for Biophotonics and Molecular Imaging (LBMI) at FORTH, holds a B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the University of Crete, specializing in bio-imaging and photonics applications developed through two-photon nanolithography for secure photonic devices. His doctoral research at the University of Twente, titled “The Effect of Fabrication Error in the Optical Response of Photonic Devices,” focuses on optical physical unclonable functions and photonic circuit design for industrial applications.
A recipient of FORTH’s Graduate Fellowship, Evangelos has presented internationally, including at CLEO Europe, and published in Advanced Optical Materials and Optica. Known for his collaborative work across Europe, he is proficient in Matlab and Python, merging technical expertise with impactful applications in photonics and nanotechnology.

Mikis Mylonakis

Mikis Mylonakis completed his PhD at the Laboratory for Biophotonics and Molecular Imaging (LBMI), part of the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL) at the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), in 2024. He was born in Chania in 1993 and pursued his undergraduate studies in Physics at the University of Crete (2011-2015), followed by a Master’s degree in Materials Science and Technology (2015-2018). His doctoral research focused on wavefront shaping for microscopic imaging of biological samples. Over the course of his studies, Mikis has worked on optical systems for imaging ultra-cold atoms and contributed to various research projects. He has been recognized with several awards, including the 1st Prize at Science on Stage Europe in 2019 for his innovative educational work in science, including an adaptive optics illumination device for in vivo imaging.Dr. Mylonakis holds the position of Chief Technology Officer at KYMATONICS.
